UK has almost 250,000 stray cats, first study estimates

High number partly caused by people not neutering pets during lockdown and is concentrated in poorer areas

With nearly 11 million cats living in about one in four households, they are Britain’s most popular pet. But until now the size of the country’s stray population has been something of an unknown.

In the first study of its kind, researchers have calculated that there are nearly a quarter of a million stray cats living in urban areas of the UK – or an average of 9.3 per square kilometre.
